News – Overwhelming force: The licensing rumor debacle

Sunday, August 6th, 2006

So, what is the deal with all of the rage against the American distributors of anime (eg ADV). By now, everybody who reads more than a few anime blogs a day knows that there was some type of hoopla over Sazumyia Haruhi no Yuuutsu being licensed by ADV, or possibly some other American R1 distributor. I noticed that almost universally there was no lack of shear hatred and dread at the thought of “X” company getting the show.(more)

There were a few non-American bloggers who had the standard line. “I usually don’t care about X title being releasing in America by X distributor….but I just had to comment.” Really, because it seemed like a lot of those who posted actually did care…a lot. I agree, some of it is justified because there are many examples of good shows being butchered by sub par dubbing, overlays, subbing, and whatnot; many of the other blogs on this subject go into great detail about it.

Obviously, the American bloggers were just as upset about the issue, if not more so. I’m not sure how many of them were just catching on some coat tails and riding a good meme for what it was worth. Don’t get me wrong, I do think they were genuinely concerned about a great series getting crappified, but I think most got carried away with the subject. Some of the commentors on those posts were even worse.

In all honesty, I don’t really care who gets the license for SHnY because it really doesn’t matter as long as they put some amount of effort into the dubbing. I’m not a “pure-ist” that believes that the dubbing of a series should be as close to the “original” as possible. That’s not even possible. Translation inherently changes the meaning at a low level. One can hope to get the entirety of the plot across in a translation but it is practically impossible to completely convey every single detail and nuance.

In that vein of thought, maybe we should start to consider dubbing another art form separate from the original work. I’m not saying that dubbing should move away from the translation or that it should actively change the story line. This is what I mean. When a dub is reviewed it should be judged on what it adds or takes away from the show, not how close it is to the original.

It’s fine to judge a work, a dub job is an additional work, one it’s own or in conjunction with the show. However, the pure-ist mindset automatically limits your ability to judge based on merit because the pure-ist view already knows what he wants to see. When impressionism and impressionist artist started to show their work, the reviewers balked at it because it didn’t fit into the mold of what they wanted to see or what they deemed proper. Now I’m not comparing the apples and oranges of painting and dubbing. I’m comparing the mindset of the reviewer. The pure-ist believes in a set method and reasons that there is only one way to do things while the other side gives the “artist” more leeway to examine the subject.

News – Man-Faye a true Superhero

Greatest Cosplayer of all Time!

[alt source here]

Here in the states (I’m not sure about anywhere else) the SciFi channel will be running a show called Who wants to be a Superhero. I caught a preview commercial a few days ago. I saw what seemed to be–my hero–Man Faye, shaking his stuff for the audition.

Above is a video from his appearence on a Jay Leno skit.

Apparently, this isn’t exactly new news. I was able to find forum post dating to at least March of this year. However, that video is so damn funny that I had to post it. It’s been a while since I’ve seen Man Faye’s gorgeously hairy flabby ass. Honestly, he has lost some ass definition since he dropped a few pounds.

I wasn’t able to find a clip of him on the new SciFi show but I hope to see Man-Faye when the show airs, even if only for a short skit. I’m pretty sure from the website that he doesn’t make the final cut, but that would make my year if Man Faye showed up as a contender to be a superhero.

In other news: Anime nano T-shirts (I think there is one with Hung shaking it too)

News – Japan Considers Pre-emptive Strike

Monday, July 10th, 2006

Japan’s main defense

In the news, Japan considers pre-emptive strike agains North Korea…here

“If we accept that there is no other option to prevent an attack … there is the view that attacking the launch base of the guided missiles is within the constitutional right of self-defense. We need to deepen discussion,” Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe said.

[...]

Japan’s constitution foreswears the use of war to settle international disputes, but the government has interpreted that to allow defensive forces. The question is whether such a pre-emptive strike could be defined as self-defense.

Even if Japan resolves the constitutionality issue, its military capability to launch such a strike is another issue. The Defense Agency has said Japan does not own weapons such as ballistic missiles that could reach North Korea, only defensive ground-to-air and ground-to-vessel missiles.

Okay, what the hell are they thinking. Let’s play a little game. It’s called “what do you think Kim will do.”

Action: Japan strikes Kimmie’s shiny new missles.

Result 1: Kim cries and rolls on the floor like a baby.

Result 2: Kim takes matters to the UN to complain about the strike.

Result 3: Kim takes it up that arse and says nothing.

Result 4: Kim has about a million North Korea soliders swim out to Japan…and well we know that that means.

Truthfully, I don’t know how Japan would fair in a one on one battle with N Korea. One on one battles don’t happen with financial powers like Japan though. The article indicates that Japan doesn’t have the military capabilities (at least not public knowledge) to launch a strike against the country. The Japanese military was supposedly severely curtailed after WWII.

On the other hand, N Korea is a military dictatorship. The ruling power is seated in the military. They would appear to have the ability to attack Japan quite readily.

Here is were I come in. There are two reasons I don’t want Japan to attack North Korea.

One, Japan is were all the anime comes from. Let’s face it American cartoon’s suck with the exception of a descent CG film every now and again. No Japan, no anime. Unacceptable.

Two, the United States in a Japanese ally and it will fight for Japan (or give them and unlimited supply of very large destructive weapons…traded for manga and asian porn). The only problem here is that the US will only put real support behind the country if there is public support. We can count on all the Anime fans but the average American may not see the benefit. Real public support would only come after pictures show up on the news (Fox news) of cute Japanese school girls lying in the street after an attack by N Korea.

The real question is where will China end up on this matter. If the US positions itself against the N Korea, at the very least China will be on the opposite side of the matter. That is to say that China will not ally itself against N Korea with the US (Britina, Japan, etc…).

Honestly, this is one of those situations where the diplomatic community wants someone to handle the situation using strong arm methods or the like. That’s not going to happen. On the other hand, no one is going to stop Japan from attacking. Let’s see how the bureaucratic and diplomatic methods workout–just maybe–they can be affective.

Update: 08/16/2006: looks like the yahoo article disappeared from the internet, I find that a little strange.
