Speed Grapher – Money…err…I mean, people are the root of all evil

The land is lost.
No one cares.
They wallow in the filth they have created.
Are there any good ones left?

Cover up that pain with pleasure.
Run away, to that place where it can’t reach you.
Know that you will run forever.
It is always with you.

Lust for it.
Love for it.
Die for it.
Don’t abandon it, you can’t.

Reach with me.
Into that dark place.
There is a pearl of hope.
Tarnished though it may be.

I was finally able to watch the last disc of Speed Grapher. You may or may not remember my last post on this show a long while ago. It took this long to rent the last disc.

In my opinion, the story would have been much better had they eliminated all of the genetic engineering junk from the plot. It did add some amount of entertainment to the show, but the main story could stand on its own merit.

Speed Grapher is a condemnation of the affluence, arrogance, greed, lust, and all other manners of evils that pervade modern societies. Even though it is Japan centric it could be any number of other countries or peoples because the subject matter is of basic human failings.

The plot revolves around the pursuit of wealth, pleasure, vengeance, and something else. Each of the main characters carries with them a tarnished past. They each try to find some measure of solace, but for the most part are denied that through the main story arc.

The driving force behind them is the only common factor. It is pain that moves them. For one it is loneliness. For the other it is a feeling of incompleteness. Then there is vengeance. Still, for another it is neglect and detachment. They all want for something other than what surrounds their being; yet, they find it nowhere. Unlike the others, these characters differ in that they are not looking for material gains or carnal pleasure. To an extent, what they want is much harder to acquire.

Some my have already noticed that I favor tragic endings. However, I think Speed Grapher ended well. Sometimes it’s nice to know that in the end, though the world may be a bleak place, there is hope.

It was self-defense

Only the bad people died.
