SoltyRei – More proof that the Japanese love Die Hard?
The Japanese love Die Hard.
While I was watching the first disc of SoltyRei I couldn’t think of anything else besides the more than evident fact that Roy Revant is modeled after John McClane. It is totally possible that this is some type of amazing coincidence. Still, the fact remains that the Japanese revere Die Hard as a masterpiece in the art of film making. So, I find it entirely plausible that the similarities are intentional.

Edit(s):
-Yeah, I noticed that there is a comment in the wiki article about this. No, I didn’t notice it until after I posted this.
- Wow, since I found the wiki reference to Bruce Willis; I’ve been finding google page references to this in forums and such. I’m starting to feel really unoriginal :(
- Aaahhh, I found some more references…I’m like the last one to realize this…
-Seriously, I’m going to have to delete this post…
-Oh, god…
-LOL
- Ahh for get it, I give up.
- no, really I’m stopping here. really.

I think the Roy Revant’s concept can be traced back to all those Hong Kong gang movie ( ‘ A better Tomorrow’, anyone? ) and so many bounty hunter mangas from 70s and 80s.
I can’t quite recall the only actual Die Hard reference I’ve seen in anime. It literally was John McClane, being blown up if I recall correctly. I’m at a loss to recall the series name though.
As soon as I saw the first scene with Roy, I thought of the John McClane character. This is mostly because the character looks like an anime version of the 1988 movie hero. I failed to mention that I was watching the English dub; of which, the voice actor may have taken the liberty of instilling in the character a little McClane-ish demeanor.
This post was a bit of a joke from the offset. In actuality, it would appear that the character is simply a generic stoic action-hero—from whatever culmination of historical works have created generic action-heroes in Japan–much like the McClane character is a generic action-hero character in the US [not to offend any Die Hard movie fans].
I think that’s where you’re making a good point wontaek, maybe even if you don’t realize it. If I where from a European country, China, Japan, or any number of other locations I may see inadvertent references to things I’ve experienced. If I were more ignorant than I am now, I may believe that the first instance of whatever it is I was experiencing was the source and possibly not the derivative work. That type of centrist mentality is not uncommon among all peoples.
I don’t actually think that the Revant character modeled directly after the McClane character, but it is fun to play with the thought.
Okay, this comment is already 3x the size of the post so I’ll rap it up here. Let me just say that the actual purpose of this post was to make you laugh.
I think I’m going to have to watch A better Tomorrow.
I feel like I’ve seen it before.
