Nodame Cantabile – more Noda and stray animal references please
…Still waiting on the sub for Ep 3.
Despite my love for Honey & Clover, I was on the fence about Nodame Cantabile (def of cantabile). It feels a lot like H&C as far as the animation goes, but that was to be expected. What I was concerned with was that the show would remind me too much of H&C.
I’m looking for something different.
I was on the fence until I saw this particular scene. If you haven’t seen it, Nodame is trying to win over Chiaki with the help of Mine who obviously has no idea what he is doing. I’m hoping that NC keeps giving us this type of humor without turning into a slapstick comedy. Although, it is a bit of a slapstick comedy already.
Nodame is a fun and interesting character, but we have not learned anything substantial about her. For that matter, we haven’t had a lot of in-depth characterization for any of the leads. What we did get was–for the most part–the general personalities.
Nodame is constantly related to a stray animal. A dog. A cat. Her general naiveté is endearing. I was temped to make a remark about how many of the main female characters in anime are extremely innocent or ignorant. I thought over some old and new series, and what was revealed is that it is not limited to the female characters.
Many anime portray the lead characters as naive. If not about their situation then that unknowingness extends to the world in general. Honey & Clover is a good example of this. Nodame Cantabile seems to be following suit. It would appear that aspect of these stories is boilerplate leading the way into the “self discovery” arc that is bound to appear about halfway through the series.
I think that the replaying of the “self discovery” arcs in many stories is the standard method of relating to the audience. It’s the way the story teller lets the audience understand the motives behind the characters actions.
Somehow, I think Noda’s actions are governed by instinct and hunger, but that may just be me.
I’m not exactly sure what to expect of NC. What I am hoping for is an entertaining ride. I’m not sure if this show is going to be as moving as H&C, but I do have high hopes for it.
I’m a sucker for type of stuff.

A small (very small) part of me is disappointed. That part wanted a Hagu version 2.0.
Edit: The original title of this post was, “more Noda and stray anime references please.” That was supposed to be “animal” not “anime,” typo :p

Unfortunately, it’s not going to move you like Honey and Clover, let me tell ya that. BUT. BUT, it’s still highly enjoyable… that is if it’s going to follow the dorama and the manga, which it seems to be loyally doing to far.
As for slapstick comedy, there will be some littered here and there. It will not be more per episode than what you’ve already seen so dont worry about that.
As for the personalities thing, that’ll come with time. But I’m sure it wont be as hard to keep up.
After watching H&C it took a while to recover. Then I was hit by NHK. I’m looking for another great show to carry me through the next few months and provide some procrastination time. I should be doing many other things besides watching anime.
I was slightly tempted to watch the live TV version, but I’ve never been a big fan of those adaptations so I passed.
As I mentioned, what I’m expecting is at least an enjoyable show.
I think its an going to a very good show. But then, that’s based on just two episodes ;). I agree that Nodame’s actions are driven by instinct. Ans she seems to take joy in them and that’s what makes her an enjoyable character for me. As for the other characters, it’ll take a few episodes to warm up to them.
But over all, I think this should be one of the better shows this season.
I know it’s a little early in the year. But as I implied, I want to have another show to fanboy over since Kanon is near completion.
From what I’ve read/seen this season NC already has a good chance at being one of the better shows this season.
