Speed Grapher – Super math man, it is not

The world is a waste land. Greed is the only passion. No one is truly good and innocent. Its putrid stench and vile underpinnings cannot be exaggerated too much. Nothing and nobody is as clearly defined as it seems, and the only truth is that there is no real truth. It’s all subjective to the point of confusions. What the goal? What is right? What is wrong? Who do you trust? When everyone is an enemy and nobody is your friend. Money..MONEY!!! You’re soul for that dollar, pesos, euro… I can’t believe that greed runs this thing. I do believe it. Everyone has good within them? Who the hell are you to make that distinction? Forget that, I’ll have that well done…scratch that, medium rare…(more)The world is a waste land. Enough about the world and more on Speed Grapher.

I’ve only watched the first few episodes so far, but I have to say that it’s a lot better than I thought it would be. I had read absolutely nothing about the show before I watched it. I wasn’t sure exactly what the “grapher” in the title meant.

We meet the main character, Saiaga, in the first couple of seconds of the first episode. Racing through a jungle, there is gun fire in the distance and dead bodies strewn about. He stops to reload his camera. It’s quite, but you know something is happening. He dashes out into an open area and is met with a weapon pointed at him. Instead of running he picks up his camera and begins to snap pictures of the one pointing a gun at him. The man yells in some incomprehensible language, and just as he begins to take aim. The man is gunned down. Saiaga snaps a shot of every bullet ripping the man’s flesh, as he falls to the ground the photographer continues to snap pictures. A soldier runs past him, “You were almost dead…” Another solder walks up beside him and while glancing down, “You pervert, it’s getting up…”

That’s right, our dear protagonist happens to get a hard-on by taking pictures of people getting killed.

I’m sold.

I like this one.

I’m taking applications for crazy gun-toting obsessive/possessive cop girlfriends, with gun-sex fetishes.

Notes: No, I’m actually not that cynical.
11/12/2006: removed “frank” from first paragraph, should have been franc, and was replaced by euro in 1999.

I’m watching this on DVD and am up to the third volume. I still like it. Some of the episodes on volume 2 were blah, but when we see more of the main baddies it’s good stuff. I enjoy the stylistic elements on the show and yes the gun sexy cop girl is awesome. The show loves to leave you hanging.

I was going to watch vol 2 when I got a chance, I hope they’re not too “blah,” or I may just skip the whole volume.

It’s nice to hear that others are watching DVD’s. I was beginning to worry that fansubs had taken over.
