Honey & Clover II – The World is not Enough

I just finished watching episode 10 of H&CII. So, Hagu made a promise to God that if she was ever to lose her ability to draw, she would take her life or in her words, “I will return my life to you.” It may not have struck many as that great a revelation because we already expected it. Hagu was an artist from the moment she was introduced to the audience. It took an entire season to flesh out and add insight to her character. Some may argue that she still doesn’t posses much depth, but I would say that she is fitting her role perfectly.(more)

Hagu exist to elicit empathy from the audience. There is a reason that she is such a small and meek character; notice, her physical appearance has for the majority of the first season and the second matched her personality. It is only when she is confronted with a dilemma like losing her purpose (her voice) that she overcomes and progresses past the meekness built into her character.

Also notice, she does waver.

When Morita states that she should stop drawing I literally yelled at the screen. “NO! What the hell are you saying you bastard!!!” Morita is too easy going. Largely, his talents he ignores. He seems to only want to live. Even his life long revenge was done half heartedly and mostly because he wanted to aid his brother.

Purpose is important.

It’s not enough to simply exist, when existence is your only purpose. I don’t find that valid. For me, life is finding that meaning. No one is born knowing what they want to be or what they will become. A person can live their entire life and not really know what it is that they were seeking, if they were looking for it at all. It doesn’t matter as much that one reaches one’s goals as much as it matters that those goals where sought after.

Purely existing without purpose or meaning is worst possible way to live.
