News – Japan Considers Pre-emptive Strike

Japan’s main defense
In the news, Japan considers pre-emptive strike agains North Korea…here
[...]
Japan’s constitution foreswears the use of war to settle international disputes, but the government has interpreted that to allow defensive forces. The question is whether such a pre-emptive strike could be defined as self-defense.
Even if Japan resolves the constitutionality issue, its military capability to launch such a strike is another issue. The Defense Agency has said Japan does not own weapons such as ballistic missiles that could reach North Korea, only defensive ground-to-air and ground-to-vessel missiles.
Okay, what the hell are they thinking. Let’s play a little game. It’s called “what do you think Kim will do.”
Action: Japan strikes Kimmie’s shiny new missles.
Result 1: Kim cries and rolls on the floor like a baby.
Result 2: Kim takes matters to the UN to complain about the strike.
Result 3: Kim takes it up that arse and says nothing.
Result 4: Kim has about a million North Korea soliders swim out to Japan…and well we know that that means.
Truthfully, I don’t know how Japan would fair in a one on one battle with N Korea. One on one battles don’t happen with financial powers like Japan though. The article indicates that Japan doesn’t have the military capabilities (at least not public knowledge) to launch a strike against the country. The Japanese military was supposedly severely curtailed after WWII.
On the other hand, N Korea is a military dictatorship. The ruling power is seated in the military. They would appear to have the ability to attack Japan quite readily.
Here is were I come in. There are two reasons I don’t want Japan to attack North Korea.
One, Japan is were all the anime comes from. Let’s face it American cartoon’s suck with the exception of a descent CG film every now and again. No Japan, no anime. Unacceptable.
Two, the United States in a Japanese ally and it will fight for Japan (or give them and unlimited supply of very large destructive weapons…traded for manga and asian porn). The only problem here is that the US will only put real support behind the country if there is public support. We can count on all the Anime fans but the average American may not see the benefit. Real public support would only come after pictures show up on the news (Fox news) of cute Japanese school girls lying in the street after an attack by N Korea.
The real question is where will China end up on this matter. If the US positions itself against the N Korea, at the very least China will be on the opposite side of the matter. That is to say that China will not ally itself against N Korea with the US (Britina, Japan, etc…).
Honestly, this is one of those situations where the diplomatic community wants someone to handle the situation using strong arm methods or the like. That’s not going to happen. On the other hand, no one is going to stop Japan from attacking. Let’s see how the bureaucratic and diplomatic methods workout–just maybe–they can be affective.
Update: 08/16/2006: looks like the yahoo article disappeared from the internet, I find that a little strange.
