Black Lagoon 1 to 6- Holy Shit this Rocks!

Who Me?

While reading some post on Black Lagoon I became intrigued. It seemed to have all the niche aspects that I like. We have a crazy lead chic (Revy), guns, daisy dukes, and gun fights. All that it needs now is bikini girls with machine guns and I’m set. Failing that, an equally crazy combat meido would do or possibly a gun toting nun. Seriously, I’m loving this show so far. I particularly like Revy. Even if they did give her a sorry ass nick name like “two hands.” What is that supposed to mean, that she’s Ambidextrous.

It’s evident that there is more to her character than I initially expected. I would have been happy with some crazy chic that shoots people at random. She randomly makes allusions to her childhood in the early episodes. Apparently, she had a shitty one. The voice acting is excellent too, with her as well. She actually conveys the attitude that she would kill as soon as let herself be open to anyone. Especially Rock, our less assertive male lead.

Black Lagoon also gets points for having a wide variety of scenes and locations. I don’t think they spent much time in Japan since the series started. I’m particularly impressed at the American historical references such as the Alamo and Charles Whitman. There were more but I didn’t note them down for this posting. Whitman came out of nowhere, there are probably more notable incidents in American history they could have used. I was a little disappointed that they referred to the tower Whitman shot from as a “church.” It was, I believe, the tower of the main building at the University of Texas, in Austin. I don’t think it was ever a church. Oddly, I had just watched a documentary on Charles Whitman and the UT Tower incident a few days prior.

The other two characters Dutch and Benny haven’t given me much to swoon about. In episode six we see Dutch kicking some Nazi buttocks. I know seeing Nazi’s get blow up, beat up, and/or shot up is always an easy sell. I also must mention that Revy did the real work in that episode when it came to Nazi clean up. I think Revy may end up on my favorite character list somewhere around Faye from Bebop.

I’m waiting for the obligatory conflict, resolution, and acceptance between Revy and Rock. There is an obvious intended attraction between the two of them. I just hope she doesn’t kill him before she realizes it.

Well, I’ve got three more episodes left then I’m caught up. As a side note, this show doesn’t need killer lolis.
