Jigoku Shoujo – Just add Killer Lolis

Even one killer loli is better than none.

I totally missed the meme on killer lolis. It seems that for the most part the fervor over Killer Lolis, has died down somewhat. Most probably due to the fact that there hasn’t been a lot of lolis doing much killing in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni lately.

I just polished off Higurashi 11. Finally, they killed someone again. It’s about damn time! Episode 10′s Satoko emo facial distortion was good, but that wasn’t enough to make up for the lack of loli homicide. However, I am forced to admin that Keiichi technically qualifies as a killer loli so it would appear that episode 11 made up for that. It’s just not the same though.

I–fore one–still think that the loli killer archetype is under utilized and under represented in many popular shows. On that vein of thought, I wanted to take this opportunity to express my opinion about the serious lack of Killer Lolis in Jigoku Shoujo.

Let us continue on with the main topic of this post. Jigoku Shoujo would be infinitely better if it had killer lolis. There is the matter of Emma Ai, but I do not put her in the same set with your standard killer loli.

Let us count the reasons why…
  1. No giant blades or weapons: Killer lolis apparently do not use a bare handed approach. Read my post about here.
  2. No emo facial distortion: Ai-chan doesn’t have any facial expression most of the time. Okay, she does show some “expression” during the final episodes, but those do not qualify as severe enough distortions.
  3. No BLOOD!!!!: I think, the only blood I remember was from episode 25 and that was Ai. We need bleeding victims or it’s not really worth it, or a lot more blood in general.
  4. No dramatic mood swings: In episode 20 while Ai was getting beaten like a read-headed-stepchild, she didn’t even get a little angry. However, the final episodes do show a dramatic mood “shift;” alas, we need mood “swings.” Random and incoherent babbling would also help.
  5. No demon eyes: Okay, “red” eyes could be demon eyes, but they are not cat-eye demon eyes. On the other hand, red eyes are not unusual in anime.
  6. While someone get’s sent to hell in practically every episode, no one actually gets “murdered,” hense no “killer” in the loli.
Of course, the precedent for killer loli-ism was set by Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. It really is the Gold Standard. I’m limiting that remark to the first arch for now. I’m not totally sure there is an actual plot, and I really don’t care with Higurashi.

That’s how much killer lolis can do for a show.

It was a most grievous error in judgment on the part of the creators of Jigoku Shoujo to not add a few KL to the mix. Please do not misunderstand me, I do like Jigoku Shoujo. A little girl goes around sending bad and/or good people to hell. It reminds me of the hologram girl in Resident Evil that says, “your all going to die down here.”

There is something about this series that I really liked, but it could be better. I was particularly impressed by the last few episodes. Lets hope they correct their errors in judgment in the rumored Jigoku Shoujo SS (here, here, and here).

**Now that I have finished this series, I’m going to do my final thoughts and then we’ll be done with Jigoku Shoujo, until Jigoku Shoujo SS.

For those of you that didn’t realize that this was meant to be a funny little comment while I prepare my thoughts on the series Jigoku Shoujo, let me say.

I really do want there to be killer lolis in Jigoku Shoujo.
