Higurashi no Naku Koro ni – Proper Lawn Care
The blade that Rena wields in the second episode and the OP has really interested me. This little bit of Higurashi has been bothering me for the past 9 episodes. What the hell is that big-ass knife? Obviously, it isn’t a butcher’s knife because of the turned up point at the end. I wasn’t convinced that it was even a kitchen utensil, I mean, for gods sake is half her freg’n size!
One thing that I have learned from watching anime is that usually these things aren’t created out of thin air. Like any good animation (not anime but a good example), attention to the details of the show make for a better experience. The best anime series pay very close attention to the details.
After much dedicated research–like at least thirty minutes–I found the answer. Actually, it appears to be a sling blade, ditch bank, or more specifically a Kaiser Blade. It is used to clear small shrubbery, grass, or weeds. At least that would be the “western” equivalent, I’m not sure what the Japanese name for the tool is. On another note, I don’t quite remember but I think the “sling blade” in the movie Sling Blade was actually part of a lawn mower.
I think I would kill over laughing if I could see Rena saying, “Uhhmmm, I reckon I’ll have to kill you…”
NOTE: or was it “I’ll reckon I’m gonna’ kill you…ummmhhhuummm.” ; Readers born after 1996 may not understand the American Cultural reference to the movie Sling Blade.
